A PASSION PROJECT.

FOR THE FANS. BY A FAN.

Gooner

/ˈɡuːnər/

A Gooner is a passionate supporter of the London-based Arsenal Football Club, a term derived from the team's nickname, "the Gunners". Originating in the 1980s and widely used today, it signifies a devoted follower famous red-&-whites..

The name stems from the club's nickname, "Gunners," which originated from the munitions factory founders (Dial Square) in 1886. It is believed to have been influenced by a fan "firm" called the "Goon Squad" in the 1980s.

It is widely used by supporters to describe themselves and is recognized as a badge of honor, acknowledging the club's long history as the "Gunners".

The Story

It all started with a post.

A Gooner since 2005, I have been passionate about everything Arsenal. I have seen the highs & lows and I always wanted to contribute to the club in my own way. One thought that stuck with me was to be a voice of the fans and write about how the matches made us feel.

But It wasn’t until 2017 that I first posted a match review on my private page- a casual post venting an awful performance. One post led to another, and then another and before I knew it, it really took off with fellow fans.

People kept saying the same thing — that the way I wrote about the matches felt different. Not just stats and scorelines, but the kind of football writing that felt like it came from someone who genuinely lived every minute of it.

So I decided to do something about it. In 2022, encouraged by friends and fellow fans, I launched The Scribbling Gooner — an Instagram page where I could combine the two things I cared about deeply: writing and design.

What started as a personal creative outlet has grown into a small but loyal community of Arsenal fans who show up for every match review, every take, every post.

Three goals.

One page.

Instagram rewards visual impact, but the whole point of this page was the writing. Every design decision had to make a reader stop scrolling — and then actually read. Those two goals don't always pull in the same direction.

Build a recognisable brand

One that feels distinct in a crowded space of football content — immediately identifiable, scroll-stop worthy.

Keep the writing at the centre

Design should amplify the words, never overshadow them. The writing is the product.

Grow an organic community

Real engagement from real fans, built on trust, consistency, and a genuine point of view.

Brand Identity

Logo concept

The idea was to convey the essence of the page at one glance. I wanted to create an identity without losing the connection from the club.

Two variants.

One identity.

The square badge lives on the profile and avatar, while also serving as the main brand logo. The horizontal cannon lockup works as a minimal brandmark, providing cleaner aesthetic while still retaining the brand identity.

Main logo

Brandmark

Typography system

The font used in the designs would be the second biggest contributor after the logo towards creating an unique brand identity in a sea of media in Instagram.

Display Heading

Super Brigade- Anchor data- 24-60 px

The big bold hook font for a strong, sporty presence covering key match stats.

Body Content

Poppins- Card & story content- 60 px

A clearly spaced font so that the header is clearly legible even in smaller screens.

Captions & Labels

Poppins- Miscellaneous stats- 24-40 px

Uniform font style continued for smaller but important data points.

Content designs

Combining everything, a curated design language was formed which brought instant recognition & recollection while scrolling through posts & reels. One of the earliest design decisions was to give each competition its own colour. A follower doesn't need to read the competition label to know what they're looking at. The colour tells them first. Readers know the context of a post before reading a single word. This reduces cognitive load and creates an intuitive browsing experience across the feed

Premier League

The core competition. Yellow signals the league — bold, high visibility, unmistakable.

Champions League

Royal, prestigious. Purple mirrors the prestige of European nights.

FA Cup

Passionate, heritage. Red for the oldest cup competition in the world.

Carabao Cup

Another important domestic cup. Green conveys its recency & dominance.

The storytelling arc.

Here's a full carousel from match week 28, where we played our fiercest rivals Tottenham in the North London derby in the Premier League and won by a huge margin. Each slide is a deliberate step: hook → context → insight → conclusion.

The Influence

Earned, not bought.

No paid promotions. No follow-for-follow tactics. Just consistent posting, genuine writing, and a design system that made every post worth stopping for.

  • 120+ followers

Organic, real accounts. Zero paid or requested.

  • 100+ posts

Consistent engagement & interactions. Each post is a week in my life.

  • 100% organic reach

Integrated into your daily shopping habit. Resale becomes routine.

These aren't just numbers — they're proof of concept. Design + writing + consistency builds a real audience from zero. Every single follower chose to be here.

Keeping the engagement.

The Gooner Table is a matchday prediction game built to do one thing — keep the community actively invested in every fixture. Because passive followers scroll past. Engaged ones show up, compete, and keep the score.

👉🏽 Consistency brings followers. But games keep them coming back.

A brand strong enough to wear.

The Scribbling Gooner didn't stop at Instagram. When a brand identity is strong enough, it translates from pixels to physical product without losing itself. TSG went offline.

Writing first. Always.

The Story's Still Being Written.

Every match brings a new review. Every review brings a new conversation. Every conversation makes the community a little stronger.

The Scribbling Gooner isn't a finished project — it's a living one.
